What we collect

StarryNight is a static reference atlas. There is no registration, no account and no collection of your observing location, equipment list or identity. The only thing you can actively submit here is an email, and its contents are entirely up to you.

Like almost every site, our server keeps ordinary access logs: IP address, time, requested page, referrer and browser string. These logs exist for debugging and aggregate counting, stay on our own server, and are not shared with third parties.

Cookies and local storage

This site sets no tracking cookies of its own and has no login cookie. The third-party advertising code described below may write cookies to cap frequency and measure performance. You can clear or block cookies in your browser at any time; the charts and sheets keep working either way.

Third-party advertising: Google AdSense

We show advertising through Google AdSense to cover hosting and drawing costs. As a third-party vendor, Google may use cookies — including the DoubleClick DART cookie — to serve ads based on your visits to this and other websites.

In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland we rely on Google's consent management platform to ask for your consent on first visit; non-essential advertising cookies are not set before you make a choice.

Analytics

Where analytics are enabled we use aggregate figures only — page views, referring country, device class — to work out which sheets need expanding. Aggregate reporting does not identify individuals.

Third-party links

Sheets link out to observatories, catalogue databases and equipment makers. We do not control those sites and cannot speak for their content or privacy practices; check their own policies when you visit.

Your rights (GDPR and CCPA)

If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict and object to the processing of your personal data, and to complain to your local supervisory authority. If you are a California resident you may request disclosure of the categories of information we collect and ask us to delete it; we do not sell personal information. Because the site builds no user profile, the practical answer to most requests will be that we hold nothing to delete — but you are welcome to write and make the request.

Children

This site is written for general astronomy readers, is not directed at children under 13, and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes, the date at the top of the page will change and the difference will be described here. Continuing to use the site means you accept the updated policy.
