What this site is, and what it is not

The material here is a reference for amateur observing, provided "as is". Catalogue values are drawn from public star catalogues and checked as carefully as we can, but transcription errors happen; lunar phase and shower dates are approximations. Nothing here is professional astronomical, navigational, meteorological or safety advice. Do not use this site for marine, aviation or backcountry navigation — plan from an official almanac and a local weather forecast.

Observing at night in an unfamiliar place carries real risk. Judge the site yourself, travel with someone, tell people where you are going, and carry proper lighting and warm clothing. We accept no liability for loss arising from use of the information here.

The text, the parametric star charts and the page design belong to StarryNight and are released under Creative Commons BY-NC 4.0: reuse with attribution for non-commercial purposes is welcome; commercial use needs written permission first. The underlying catalogue values are astronomical facts in the public domain.
